We would like to remind our customers that as of 1st March 2018, shippers will now be responsible for determining whether or not their cargo is hazardous to the marine environment – HME.
Cargo must be classified in accordance with the criteria of the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). Appendix I to MARPOL Annex V lays out the classification criteria. Vessels will be also required to use a new garbage record book which will be split into two parts as follows:
Part 1 – Garbage other than cargo residues
This part is for garbage generated on board and now includes electronic waste items known as E – waste. This is for items such as computers and printer cartridges generated on board the vessel.
Part 2 –Cargo residues
This part is to record the disposal of cargo residues. Residues are split into two categories HME or Non HME.
